2006/2007 Carl Brandon Awards Announced

The winner of the 2006 Carl Brandon Parallax Award is Mindscape by Andrea Hairston.

The 2007 Carl Brandon Parallax Award winner is The Shadow Speaker by Nnedi Okorafor. The 2007 Carl Brandon Kindred Award winner is From the Notebooks of Doctor Brain by Minister Faust.

A presentation ceremony for the 2006 and 2007 awards will take place at Arisia, an annual science fiction convention held in Boston, Massachusetts. Award recipients Andrea Hairston and Nnedi Okorafor will be in attendance, and the honors lists for the 2006 and 2007 Parallax and Kindred Awards will be announced there.

The Carl Brandon Parallax Award is given to works of speculative fiction created by a self-identified person of color. This Award includes a $1000 cash prize.

The Carl Brandon Kindred Award is given to any work of speculative fiction dealing with issues of race and ethnicity; nominees may be of any racial or ethnic group. This Award includes a $1000 cash prize.

Nominations for the 2008 Parallax and Kindred Awards are now closed. They will announce the winners later this year. Nominations for the 2009 Parallax and Kindred Awards will be accepted through June 1, 2010. Visit the awards page for more information.

The mission of the Carl Brandon Society is to increase racial and ethnic diversity in the production of and audience for speculative fiction. Their vision is a world in which speculative fiction, about complex and diverse cultures from writers of all backgrounds, is used to understand the present and model possible futures; and where people of color are full citizens in the community of imagination and progress.
